Q: How are windshields built?

A: Windshields are constructed using a technology called glass laminating and are held together by a high-strength vinyl called polyvinyl butyral (PVB).

Q: How thick must a windshield’s PVB be?

A: PVB must be .030 of an inch thick in order to hold the occupants in the vehicle. PVB must also be flexible in order to reduce injury if a person is thrown into the glass. All currently fabricated windshields use this specification to satisfy federal motor vehicle safety standards for vehicle manufacturers.

A: In many cases, windshield repairs can be performed in 30 minutes or less. If your windshield needs to be replaced it will take around 60 minutes.
